Getting Great at FoW - Part 3

Mastering FoW - Hi everyone, I thought I would display my arrogance finally and talk about being 'great' at FoW. Am I 'great'? No, am I better than I was this time last year definitely - and over the course of the tournaments and games I've played I've developed a few insights into getting really good at this game. The areas I think you need to master are 'lists' , 'rules' and 'Implementation'. So here's another trio of articles exploring these.

Implementation - so what do I mean by this? Well I'm going to sound like a broken record, but you need to play games. But I'm going to change this slightly, you have got to play games out of your comfort zone. What do I mean by that? Well I do not think to be really good you can play the same way repetitively.

Vietnam US Infantry Company

Hello All

The last leg of my US leg infantry (pun of sorts intended) is finished! I will admit I was struggling to find the time to paint them up so I sent them over to our own Matt (Papa Bear) so I could finally start playing some games!
Matt painted the models while I did all the basing as I wanted to make sure it matched the Helicopters I had already done.

T-34 Tankovy Company (SBX29) - Review

Hi all

I picked up a couple of the new T-34 Tankovy Company (SBX29) boxsets over the weekend. I wanted to see how the first Battlefront plastic and resin kits went together, something I think we'll see more of in the future.

Lets see whats in the box.

German Greatcoat Infantry (GE862) - Review

Hi folks, Matt here.

I wanted share with you all my latest painting project (early war German infantry - Barbarossa style!) that I'm working on for a certain upcoming tournament in January and thought, whilst I'm at it why not do a little review on the all new German Greatcoats (GE862) at the same time!? Two birds, one stone and all that jazz!
Do not be fooled by the Late war symbol being shown on the packaging... These models are all for early war (along with the rest of the German greatcoat range). I have since ordered another 'infantrie platoon' and the rest of the options to build my 1550 points army for next year. For reviewing purposes I shall stick to focusing on the contents inside of the infantry blister GE862.

M48A3 Patton (VUSBX05)

Hi All

Continuing with my Vietnam US army I have added a couple of Patton Tanks and man these bad boys are massive!
These are the last models I needed to do, bar the two infantry platoons (which Matt is painting up for me) for my first US infantry list. So once I get them back off Matt expect a few Nam AAR's as I bought a fully painted North Vietnamese army a few months ago.

Getting Great at FoW - Part 2

Lists
It is important to realise that there are better lists than others, but bringing a good 'net' list  will not mean you auto win.

New Beginnings Part Two - Man Cave Completion

After a very busy couple of weeks I have finally completed my new gaming room (see part one here) I'm sure there will be one or two finishing touches I'd like to add eventually such as posters and more shelves for display/ storage purposes but for now I am well pleased! :D

Review - BBX27 Sherman Armoured Platoon

Hi all, recently I was able to obtain a box of the new BBX27 Sherman Armoured Platoon from battlefront - now like many of you I have built the old resin Sherman, the open fire Sherman and Sherman from other manufacturers, so how do these stack up to them?
Well firstly packaging is what we expect from Battlefront, sprues are on the back and the handy QR code to link you straight to the website for assembly instructions is always good.

Late War AAR - Panssari vs US 1st Armored - Free For All

Hi All

Another AAR and an odd one for you, I decided to risk unleashing the mighty Panssari  company - I almost felt the ground tremble.  Paul opted for US 1st Armoured from the Italy compilation - really wanting to field his 76mm! We rolled up Free for All

The lists

Starting with Paul, he'd gone for an Italian US list - he realised after he's made a small mistake as the 57mm guns were not an option in the list but not a huge problem in hind site he had

Project Finland Epilogue - Panssari Kompanie

Hi all,

One of the common questions which I got asked whilst painting my Finns was 'what do you think of the Panssari'. Honestly never thought about it, but then there was the EW sale, and I needed 2 blisters, so I ended up getting some T-28's...

So what is it about the Finnish panassari that is so appealing - obsolete fearless veteran tanks. I'll be honest I'm normally against fearless tanks on principle, and I prefer a few quality tanks over lots of chaff - but somehow with the Finns it works... Ok it kinda works in LW, but in MW...

So let's look at the two versions quickly

Reading Warfare - Early War AAR

Another month and another tournament.  This month saw me head off to Warfare at Reading (what a name for a show!) and take part in the 1500pts Early War Flames of War tournament.  I had my usual dilemma with what to take.

I took Polish Cavalry to my last Early War tournament and had some good fun but I fancied a change so why not take the French Foreign Legion.  I managed to pick up a Desert Fort fairly cheaply at Dark Sphere over the summer so a plan was hatched.

I did my usual trick and left painting the army until the very last minute, I didn't finish painting until 11pm on the day before the tournament!

However I like to think the effort was worth it and I got some very nice compliments from some of the really talented painters in the tournament scene which is always encouraging for a newbie to hear.

I also knocked up a display board to make carrying round the army that bit easier.  It had cut outs for both objectives and the fort.  If anybody wants a how-to article on how it was built let me know in the comments section below.

 The end result!

Winner Dave's DShk Trucks

Hey Guys

These guys represent the culmination of my Desperate Measures Tankovy list, which I started at the beginning of this year for the Corrivalry tournament.  Yes, it really does take me this long to paint an army.
I promise there's a driver in there, which I painted up really nicely, but you can't seem him...he could be all flat brown for anyone will ever know...sigh :)

AAR - Mid War - Mixed Tankovy Vs Panzer Pioneers - Dust

Hello All

I'm back again with another AAR with my Mixed Tankovy building up to Reading Warfare, this time I was playing Robin. As Robin is doing Early War at Reading he asked me what I waned to play against, I said "take something my Mixed Tankovy will struggle against". So I got to Robin's and found I was playing against Panzer Pioneers again... but the list was different (no Brummbars! But Panthers...).

We rolled up Dust Up, I was going to ask to re roll it as I had just played the same mission against KP last time out (see the AAR here), but I then thought it would be good to see if I had learned anything from my last game. Hopefully I learnt something.

Mixed Tankovy
  • HQ KV-1e
  • 6 KV-1e
  • 10 Matilda CS
  • 8 Stuarts + AAMGs
  • 4 BA-64
  • Limited Seagull
Panzer Pioneers
  • HQ + Panzerknackers
  • Full Pioneer Platoon + Panzerknacker
  • Full Pioneer Platoon + Panzerknacker
  • 3 Pak 40s
  • 1 Looted KV-1e (CT)
  • 2 Panthers
  • 3 Nebs

The Great German LW Infantry List Competition

"Ford there’s an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to us about this script for Hamlet they’ve worked out." Douglas Adams, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

A few weeks ago I'd heard rumblings of the great Bill Willcox's post on WWPD, and I thought we'd flip it on it's head! What if you give a bunch of slightly inebriated Brits with little to moderate Tournament Experience the brief 'What's the most competitive Late War German Infantry list at 1780 points' what sort of outcomes would you end up with? Well this is that competition.

Below you will find some rather interesting lists from the Breakthrough Assault Team, we'd like you our loyal readers to consider which is the best and let us know on the attached poll, and for bonus points say which person wrote which list.
